At Highbury

The club’s history remembers Jim as “an exceptional batsman, successful captain and efficient umpire.” He won the League batting prize in 1955, the year Highbury were Division B champions, and the club’s records show him captaining the First XI in 1953, 1955, 1957, 1963, 1964 and 1966.

Around the mid-1950s he also became the club’s groundsman, and for more than forty years he tended the square that gave Highbury a wicket renowned for its quality. He umpired the 1975 Hepworth Cup Final with Geoff Waite, and in 1977 the players presented him with a pewter tankard.

Through the 1980s he was the club’s League representative, and in 1989 he became Highbury’s President.
